Foodies will enjoy seeing some of their much-loved ingredients live, such as cinnamon, chocolate and the colour used in cheddar cheese.

Dr Hugh Glen’s photo taken in the Durban Botanic Gardens of Encephalartos woodii (Wood’s Cycad – extinct in the wild).

Hugh will show a tree that makes us think of steam trains, another that links (by a sort of “six degrees of separation”) Victorian furniture, buying a goat for supper in Yemen, and Beethoven.

He considers the sad story of the world’s loneliest tree, as well as an elderly lala palm, and one that inspired a previous group to sing old advertising jingles from Springbok Radio.

Who ever said trees weren’t well-connected?

Entrance: R50 per person towards Hugh’s daughter, Melissa Glen’s medical costs.

Melissa, also a botanist, has a blood disease requiring frequent hospital stays.
