Woman arrested for bogus alcohol

The SAPS would like the public to adopt the motto ‘Fighting crime begins with me’ and report criminal activities.

A 42-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday for producing counterfeit alcohol items.

Port Shepstone Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said members of the crime prevention unit in Port Shepstone arrested the woman and seized a substantial amount of liquor and ethanol in 250 litre drums.

“Our members acted on a tip-off regarding a house in Msikaba area (Betania) which was operating an illegal shebeen.”

Upon arrival, police discovered the goods to the estimated value of R150 000.

“The seals on the liquor had been tampered with and the labels appeared to be suspicious. It is alleged that the suspect used ethanol which she purchases from Durban.”

According to Captain Mpinge brand representatives have taken samples of the alcohol for testing.

“The public are warned that consuming alcohol which has been diluted or which may have been mixed with other chemicals can cause serious illness or even death.”

The suspect paid R2 500 bail and was due to appear in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s court yesterday (Wednesday).

The SAPS would like the public to adopt the motto ‘Fighting crime begins with me’ and to readily report any criminal activities in their community’s especially illegal liquor outlets and drug dens.
