SUGAN NAIDOO: On the Road – Peugeot is feisty and fun to drive

Overall, the Peugeot 208 is an attractive car and fun to drive.

Being able to test drive the new Peugeot 208 for about a week was quite an experience and I felt privileged and honoured to be able to do so.

Daya Reddy, manager at Bates Motors Shelly Beach, made this possible. He handed me the keys and said ‘enjoy’.

The model I drove was Faro yellow in colour – the stylish compact city car more then comfortable in tight spaces and even more so on the open road.

It handled the twisty, busy traffic in the town of Port Shepstone with ease and was more than happy to express itself on the open road when the family and I took a trip to Durban.

It’s no surprise then that the Peugeot 208 has won some awards, including the Motor Enthusiasts Choice Award at the 2022 SA Car of the Year competition, as well as winning the 2020 European Car of the Year.

Overtaking on an incline was a breeze, the response excellent from the 1.2T Allure 3-cylinder which offers 74kw and 205 Nm of torque.

It’s impressive, and Peugeot claims the zero to 100km/h is 9.9 seconds.

The 208 embodies the future of driving with distinctive sporty lines and a new 3D i-Cockpit.

In the Peugeot 208 you can experience agile and intuitive driving, with the compact multifunction steering wheel, configurable seven inch capacitive colour touchscreen and seven satin chrome ‘piano’ toggle switches.

It’s a front-wheel drive and comes with a five-year/100 000km mechanical warranty, three-year 60 000km service plan, ABS anti-lock brakes with electronic brake assist (EBA), dual front and curtain airbags, 17 inch Caesium alloy wheels, 50-l tank capacity, 311-l boot capacity, keyless start, seats with synthetic leather and cloth, and more.

Overall, I’d say it was a hit and the family enjoyed the drive in it. It was comfortable, fuel-efficient and certainly eye-catching as we noticed some admiring glances.

It is available in four models: 1.2 Active, 1.2T Allure MT6, 1.2T Allure AT6 and 1.2T GT AT6.
