Clean Surf and learners conduct three-day beach clean up

The learners were tasked to take sand samples of affected coastline areas by sieving sand at Toti Lagoon to start off with.

The Clean Surf Project teamed up with Westville Boys’ High School to conduct a three-day beach clean up from Monday, 26 August to Wednesday, 28 August.  On day one, the  school community project commenced at Amanzimtoti Lagoon.

The learners were tasked to take sand samples of affected coastline areas by sieving sand at Toti Lagoon to start off with.  Applauding all seven learners, Keagan Potgieter, Liam Labuschagne, Ethan Elder, Ethan Beck, Jaryd Ball, Zepplin Bartlett and Caleb Daily, collected 132kg of plastic and other waste at Toti Lagoon.

The second day saw the learners hard at work at Amanzimtoti Main Beach.  The boys took sand samples of six square meters in three different areas to measure the amount of microplastics buried underneath the top sand surface. Microplastics are very small pieces of plastic that pollute the environment, with toxic to fatal consequences when accidentally  ingested by wild or ocean life.

They thanked the Clear Waters Spur Steak Ranch for sponsoring food and refreshments on the day.

The learners conducted their community service with Clean Surf Project at Umbogintwini(Dakota) Beach on day three. They collected more sand samples by digging and sieving sand.  Romy Wenzel of Sapphire Coast Tourism thanked the learners for their hard work. “We hope to seeing the learners as well as community members on Saturday, September 21 at 9am to celebrate International Coastal Clean Up Day at Umbogintwini Beach, Amanzimtoti Golf Course.  All sand samples taken will be presented on the day highlighting plastic marine pollution.”
