Sky’s the limit for fledgling flyer
Ex-Toti High pupil is gearing up towards attaining his Private Pilot's Licence.
IT was a big day in the flying career of Gareth Hazell, ex Toti High School, captain of Winklespruit Surf Lifesaving Club and resident of Warner Beach, when he took his first solo flight in a Robinson R22 helicopter on Saturday, 8 March in the run up to attaining his Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL).
Having enrolled with Starlite Aviation based at Virginia Airport as a student helicopter pilot, Gareth, on completing his matric final exams, worked hard to complete the PPL exam requirements along with prerequisite flying hours prior to going solo.
From an early age, he has had the desire to make a career out of aviation and going solo is a big step towards realising that dream.
In upcoming weeks, Gareth will complete the remainder of the practical flying exercises for PPL under the supervision of his instructor at Starlite, Kobus Niemand, who has been an inspiration to him. Thereafter, the programme will be fine-tuned towards completing the exam requirements for his Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPl), a lot of practical flying with some time at flight school in Mossel Bay and thereafter the sky is quite literally the limit.
