Drunk thugs attack ‘Mr Sponge’

Sponge Box is a familiar sight to motorists in Doonside.

A car wash’s mascot was attacked by two men on Monday afternoon, 29 September.

Sponge Box, the mascot for Shiny Bubbles who stands on the side of Rockview Road, to entice motorists to support the car wash, is a familiar sight to motorists in Doonside.

According to owner, Ronel Lessing, two drunk men in a white Hyundai Accent attacked the mascot after lunchtime.

“Our box is injured,” she said. “Due to this our box won’t be waving for a day or two. These two guys stopped in the road and pushed and hit Mr Sponge. Help arrived and they made it off as a joke, ran for their vehicle and took off.

I am shocked. I mean a joke is a joke, but really? Our guy is trying to earn a good honest living and we are creating a job for him.
He has a limited view wearing the outfit, so for these hooligans to attack him from the side is pathetic.”

Although not badly injured, the employee is recuperating at home for “a day or two” and should be back to giving passing motorists a friendly wave on Thursday.

If anybody witnessed this incident and can provide Ronel with a number plate or know these attackers, contact Shiny Bubbles on 031-903-1354.
