Illovo club members recall ‘good old days’

The club opened its doors in 1979 and closed in 1998.

It was an afternoon of reminiscing about the ‘good old days’ when Robin Brown hosted a get-together of the surviving members of the old Illovo Country Club on Friday, 24 October at her home in Gus Brown Road.

Guests included Eric Hulley, who celebrated his 90th birthday in August, Sandy Miller, Alex Clark and Beryl Dixon, all past chairmen of the club. Alan Smith and Frank Quinn, also past chairmen, were invited but unfortunately could not attend.

Robin was not only a past chairman, but also one of the first two women members of the club.

“This get-together started when I phoned Eric to wish him happy birthday and he said how nice it would be to see everyone,” said Robin.

The club opened its doors in 1979 and closed in 1998 with the closure of the mill.

“It was 20 wonderful years,” said Robin.

“Our bowls section was known for its beautiful surroundings and happy atmosphere. We were very competitive and successful.”

Past members came from as far as Kloof for the chance to get together when the invitation was extended.

“It was great to see each other – in some cases for the first time since the club closed down. We are one big, happy family.”
