Christmas came early for 160 Mooihawens residents when the Robin Hood Foundation’s (RHF) Bless-a-Granny and Grandpa campaign touched down in Toti on Wednesday, 29 October.
The aim of this campaign is to bless elderly people living in old age homes around the greater Durban area. Gifts valued at R150 are donated by the public and distributed by the Robin Hood Foundation.
According to Kim Griffith Jones, co-ordinator of the RHF, the gift is one aspect of the campaign, while the time spent and conversations had during the visits are what the residents value the most.
“Many elderly people living in old age homes don’t receive visits for years at a time and it means so much to them to have someone share a cup of tea with them and ask them how they are doing and listen to the answer,” said Kim.
“The visit to Mooihawens was such a wonderful experience for both the residents and our team of amazing volunteers. The residents expressed their gratitude for being included in the campaign, for the generous gifts and the great memories made.
They also donated a large pile of baby jumpers and beanies, which they had knitted for the foundation’s ‘Love the Babies’ project.”
If you would like to buy a personalised gift or gifts for the elderly, email Kim at robinhoodfund@telkomsa.net. Alternatively you can deposit R150 per gift into the RHF’s bank account and reference it ‘Bless a Granny’ and the foundation will buy the gift on your behalf.
You can also join them on one or more of the visits to spread festive cheer.
“The RHF thanks the public for fulfilling an incredible 2,500 wish lists for the campaign in only 10 days,” said Kim. “Every year we are blown away by the care and generosity of the people living in our province.”
