Art contest win lights up young artist’s life

Hannah's oil pastel was based on the topic 'what does light mean to her'.

Kingsway High School artist, Hannah Forbes’ oil pastel depicting what Diwali means to her won her first place in the FNB Durban Diwali Art Festival.

“At first I was completely in disbelief that I had won, but after a while it set in and I started to bubble with excitement and joy,” said the grade 10 pupil from Seaview.

“I didn’t think I had a chance of winning or even coming close. This was the first time I had entered a competition, so I was really shocked when my friends told me I had won – I thought they were all joking.”

Hannah’s oil pastel was based on the topic ‘what does light mean to her’. “I don’t celebrate Diwali. However to me it means the festival of light.

It took me two-and-a-half to three hours to complete, because it was my first time using oil pastels.

I haven’t started painting yet, as that’s part of our grade 11 syllabus.

I’ve done art since primary school, but when I got to grade 10, I made the decision to study art further because I enjoy it, I always have.

I would like to continue with art after school. Although I’m not quite sure what I want to do. I know I want to do something in an artistic field, such as study fine art or graphic design.”

Hannah’s prize of an iPad was welcomed as an early birthday present, as she celebrates her 16th birthday on Saturday.
