INTERESTED members of the Amanzimtoti community arrived at the hall of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Kingsway on Saturday, 22 November, where they were treated to a scrumptious breakfast and an informative talk by volunteer members of the Amanzimtoti Trauma Unit (ATU).
The talk commenced with a brief background sketch on the ATU, presented by Lynette Rowe, chairman of the board, and how they went about their vital core business, caring for people of all races, cultures and beliefs in times of stress.
This speech was followed by an emotional address by invited keynote speaker of the day, Jean Esterhuizen, who spoke about the high and highly unacceptable statistics of rape and violent crimes being committed in present day South Africa against women and children. The statistics reported were alarming, to say the least, and the guests present were taken aback by the one specific statistic mentioned, namely that a woman is raped in South Africa every 15 seconds. Jean added that many of these acts were committed by people well-known to the victim, and many cases were not reported.
A plea for financial assistance in the form of donations and pledges was made to guests. It was also mentioned that despite the fact that the unit is acknowledged by the National Lottery, no funding has been received as yet. Assistance is urgently required for the monthly administrative management of the safehouse which has been set-up to assist people in need, and these costs include items such as telephone accounts, internet costs, non-perishable foodstuffs and cleaning materials.
The trauma unit staff and volunteers made passionate pleas for anyone interested in helping to come forward and become involved in this worthy cause. The unit caters for all in times of dire need, and their policy is to never turn anyone away.
Once the speakers had given their speeches, it was time for the guests to enjoy a sumptious breakfast spread. Many enjoyed catching up on the latest news with friends over a cup of coffee or tea. The general feeling among the guests was that the day was a resounding success, and the hope is that the community will join hands and give ATU the assistance and support it so richly deserves.
