Go-ahead for tombstones on graves

Residents are now allowed to erect tombstones on the gravesites of loved ones.

eTHEKWINI Municipality has given the go ahead for the erection of tombstones on graves at all municipal cemeteries.

“In 2011, the municipality took a decision to only allow the erection of headstones on gravesites, as opposed to tombstones. This was done to allow for more burial space and to ensure uniformity of gravesites, which would ultimately contribute to the aesthetic look of the cemeteries,” said municipal spokesman, Thabo Mofokeng.

“Residents expressed unhappiness about the new by-law. As a caring municipality, the rule was reviewed and people’s feelings taken into consideration. As a result, council has rescinded its decision and decided to revert back to the old system. With immediate effect, residents are now allowed to erect tombstones on the gravesites of their loved ones at all municipal cemeteries.”
