TWO of five men who fired shots at police in KwaMakhutha were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 22 July.
“Members of the Brighton Beach task team and KwaMakhutha SAPS approached a vehicle with five occupants. When they spotted police they opened fire and fled,” said KZN police media centre’s Col Jay Naicker.
Police chased the vehicle and returned fire.
“The suspects lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a house. Three fled the scene, while two were apprehended by police. A 9mm pistol and five cellphones were found in their possession.
“A case of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm was opened at KwaMakhutha SAPS.
The suspects, aged 18 and 24-years-old, are expected to appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrates Court on charges of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
KZN police commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended police officers for keeping their cool while pursuing the suspects.
“It is obvious that these individuals were up to no good. Detectives will ensure they are profiled to establish whether they are wanted for other crimes in the province. I am pleased that our police officers were not injured during the shoot-out,” she said.
