Call to adopt a shelter dog

Visit Toti SPCA and find a four-legged friend to add to your family.

OCTOBER is SPCA adopt a shelter dog month and Amanzimtoti SPCA pledges to celebrate the month and all months exalting the spirits and the charms of shelter dogs across the world.

According to the SPCA, people should stop purchasing dogs, breeding dogs and exploiting dogs and turn to shelters to find their new best friend.
Visit the SPCA in Nyathi Road, Athlone Park and find a four-legged friend to add to your family.

There are rules to abide by, if you are interested in adopting a dog.
One may adopt an animal upon a property inspection done by an SPCA inspector. Should the requirements not meet approval, the organisation may turn down the application to adopt a pet.

Toti SPCA will only re-home an animal within its area of operation, from the Umlaas Canal in the north, to Hibberdene in the south.
An adoption fee is charged and includes the first vaccinations of the animal, de-worming, compulsory sterilisation of all male and female dogs and cats.

After the adoption process has been completed, the owner is responsible for annual vaccinations and any veterinary treatment that may be required.
It is a privilege and not a right to own an animal.

SPCA urges prospective owners to consider these vital questions:
* Your new pet will be your responsibility to care for, for the rest of its life, which could be 10 to 15 years or more.

* Have you really thought it through?

* Are you sure that you want the animal?

* Do you have the time to spend with it – socialising and playing with it?

* Can you pay for any vet treatment that it requires, if it is sick or injured?

* Is your property secure, so that it can’t roam in the street and cause a nuisance to man or beast?

* Can you afford to feed and house it so that it doesn’t suffer?

* Will you provide shelter from the weather?
