Pedestrian critical after N2 crash

The man seems to have underestimated the speed and distance of the vehicle

A pedestrian crossing the N2 northbound carriageway at Winklespruit was struck by a car at about 6.05pm last night (Monday, 1 February).

Reports from the scene indicate the man, estimated to be in his late 20s, ran across the highway about 50 metres from a bridge running under the N2.

The man seems to have underestimated the speed and distance of the vehicle and was struck by a Mercedes travelling towards Amanzimtoti.

Netcare 911 paramedics found the man lying prone in the centre median with life-threatening injuries. The damage to the vehicle indicates the man slid across the bonnet of the car, causing his head to smash into the windshield on the driver side. The driver managed to control the vehicle and although traumatised, escaped injury.

Paramedics worked fervently to stabilise the pedestrian at the scene and after they placed him on a ventilator, they spinal immobilised him on a trauma board. The patient was then transported to a government hospital under the constant care of an advanced life support paramedic.
