21 Club takes trip to Israel

Marie spoke sensitively and sincerely about her trip, clearly conveying her enjoyment in seeing the places which she had learnt about but never seen.

THE 21 Club members and guests were wished not only a belated happy new year but a sincere ‘Shalom’ at the first luncheon of the year.

The decor and outfits reflected the bright blue and white of the Israeli flag and the familiar six-pointed Star of David prevailed.

The simple white and blue candles looked perfect on the eight exquisite, dark blue cloths which 21 Club member, Norma Stapelberg had hand-painted. Many thanks to Norma of Creative Image Craft and Paint Studios who donated these cloths to the club and also gave two vouchers for free lessons in a lucky draw.

Thanks to Lords and Legends for a delicious lunch, especially the decor-friendly blueberry cheesecake.

The speaker was Marie Bowker who, though born in South Africa, grew up in Zimbabwe. She also lived in Gaborone, Botswana and finally moved to Toti in 2007. Marie is a keen crafter who loves working with flowers and cooking with herbs.

Her unexpected visit to Israel with her daughter in late 2014 inspired her to write instalments of her trip, two of which appeared on the Joy Magazine website.

Marie spoke sensitively and sincerely about her trip, clearly conveying her enjoyment in seeing the places which she had learnt about but never seen. Her talk particularly appealed to those who have visited Israel and shared these experiences and also to those who aspire to do so. Several members came to the table afterwards to thank her for an interesting, heart-warming presentation.

Due to several resignations and members relocating, seven new members were welcomed. A successful vote was taken to increase membership to 90 so another 10 members from the waiting list will be welcomed at the February luncheon.

Brenda Liversage was congratulated on her 70th birthday. Eight members won a Lotto ticket in the lucky draw – but no real luck apparently.

The next luncheon will be held at Lords and Legends conference room on Wednesday, 24 February at noon for 12.30pm. St Valentine will be honoured with red, black and white decor. The theme is ’21 Club loves Toti’ and the speaker is Shaun Callaghan of the Army Saints.

Members are reminded that confirmation of intention to attend or not, and names of guests must be received by any committee member by Friday, 19 February. The numbers are: Lyn on 082-572-1328 or on 031-903-4026; Golda on 083-633 -6338 or on 031-916-7001; Jenny 083-299-4619 or 031-904-1674 and Gwyn on 072-223-3009 or 031-903-3126. Unfortunately, guests can only be accommodated if there is room.
