Prizes sought for adaptive surf contest

Adaptive Unlimited hosts an adaptive surfing fun day and prizegiving at Toti main beach on Saturday, 9 July.

Adaptive Surfing KZN, which offers disabled and visually impaired Toti residents the chance to participate in watersports, has been running for two years and this will be their first official prizegiving.

“There will be seven surfers participating who have various disabilities,” said Wesley Smith of Adaptive Unlimited. “Each surfer will be accompanied by their carer and they will be allocated a team to assist them on the day. Toti residents are invited to watch at the beach and witness South Africa’s top seeded completely blind surfer Danito Mondlane ride the waves.”

From 9.30am to 11am, teams will take participants into the water to hit the waves, depending on conditions.

Lifeguards will do a rescue demonstration, and explain basic water safety regulations, before the surfing participants enjoy a sponsored lunch at Clear Water Spur. Teams will then pit their culinary skills against each other in a potjie cook-off, while participants get taken to Funland for sponsored games, and Splash Waterworld to ride the slides.

Participants will then re-join their teams to enjoy a potjie tasting and prizegiving.

The whole day is completely free of charge for everybody.

“We are still looking for prizes for the expression session (best surfer manoeuvre, body-boarder manoeuvre and best wipe out), which starts at 9am, and the potjie cook-off (first prize and runner-up),” said Wesley.

“We have arranged trophies for the adaptive surfing entrants, however we would like to give each winner (seven children) something to go with their trophy.” If anybody can assist with prizes, call Wesley on 082-802-1349

“We are also looking for any bodyboarder or surfer who can enter the expression session, as well as any musicians to join the ‘muso’ team.”
