Life imprisonment for Folweni murder of policeman

The two men were arrested three weeks later and Constable Chiliza’s service pistol was recovered.

Durban High Court sentenced a cop killer to life imprisonment on Friday, 15 December for the murder and robbery of Constable Sphesihle Joseph Chiliza at Folweni.

On 28 February at about 4am, Constable Chiliza, who was stationed at King Shaka International Airport, was on his way to work. He was dressed in full uniform and in possession of his service pistol.

While waiting for transport at a bus stop, he was attacked and fatally shot by Mfanafuthi Ngidi (29) and Mzwandile Ngidi (23). They robbed him of his service pistol and two fully loaded magazines.

A case of murder was opened at Folweni police station and the docket was transferred to Durban Organised Crime Hawks members for investigation. The two men were arrested three weeks later and Constable Chiliza’s service pistol was recovered.

Mzwandile was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, 15 years for armed robbery, 15 years for illegal possession of firearm and five years for possession of ammunition. His sentences will run concurrently. Mfanafuthi was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for armed robbery.
