November is ‘Movember’ and Khanya Hospice appeals to all men to get tested for prostate cancer this month.

“Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. ‘Movember’ is the month that we really encouraging men to be tested, especially for prostate cancer,” said Khanya Hospice CEO, Neil McDonald. “Men are normally not very keen to go but we are making an appeal to you, be wise, make a decision and have this done. Think of yourself and your family.”

The exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown. There are a few known risk factors like family history, obesity, lack of exercise and excessive read meat intake and not enough fruit and vegetables in your diet. It has been shown that a substance in cooked tomatoes prevents prostate cancer to a large extent.

Contact your medical practitioner and have your test done. Khanya Hospice offers free palliative nursing care to those who request this. Men are requested to grow their beards and moustaches and shave them off at the end of November.

“During Movember, when you have a braai or while at rugby, your club or church, tell you friends and family you are supporting a good course, ask them to give you a donation and at the end of November, contact Khanya Hospice and make a donation. You can also take a photo of your friends or family with their beards and moustaches and send it to us,” said Neil.
