Level two lockdown well-received by tourism industry
The organisation that covers areas from Umbogintwini River, Athlone Park, Mahlongwa River, Clansthal and inland areas, is looking forward to welcoming travellers from across the country while international travel remains prohibited.
After a challenging six months, level two lockdown has been well received by members of the tourism industry.
The effects of restrictions resulted in major events and conventions being cancelled. Major tourist attractions were inaccessible to both visitors and locals and directly impacted formal as well as informal jobs in the city’s tourism industry.
Sapphire Coast Tourism’s Romy Wenzel said, “It’s been a challenging five to six months for the entire tourism industry. The recent announcement of level two has come as a great relief for many local businesses that offer tourism-related products such as accommodation outlets, restaurants, outdoor as well as indoor entertainment, tour guiding and so forth.”

“There are many things to do and see with the great news being that beaches are open to the public. Our treasured coastline is once again ready to be explored again for certain activities, excluding bathing. While some businesses have already been trading under strict regulations in the past few weeks, we are thrilled to announce that scuba diving at Aliwal Shoal and Crocworld Conservation Centre have finally opened their doors again. We encourage the public to support local while adhering to level two regulations by wearing a mask and ensuring social distancing at all times,” she added.

Mayor Kaunda welcomed the announcement by the president and said, “The announcement of the easing of the lockdown restrictions comes at a time when the city’s tourism authorities are working relentlessly to ensure that we respond effectively to Covid-19 and as far as possible put in place strategies that not only shield the tourism sector against the pandemic but also ensure that our city constructs and sustains a safe and healthy tourist destination status more aggressively than we have done before. Our stakeholders, business and product owners have afforded the city their full support and co-operation in the fight against the pandemic by ensuring that establishments, products and services are Covid-19 compliant and have put their weight behind the city’s economic recovery plan.”
