New home for Elders Voice

The building can house 45 residents and Joanne appeals for any assistance to turn the house into a home. The renovations are expected to be complete by 1 May.

The Elders Voice recently signed a lease on a building based in Warner Beach and founder, Joanne Herbst, could not be more delighted.  It recently celebrated five years since the organisation was established and almost four years since the doors to its first home was open.

“The purpose of this building is to create another combined community setting, similar to the building in Montclair which houses 95 people. We still have small houses in Amanzimtoti which we will retain, but some of them will be closed. This allows more people in need to have a forever home. No one needs to live in squalor. We offer dignified living at an affordable rate for people over the age of 60.”

“We are always opened to donations since we received no government funding. We are quite dependent on donations and community assistance. We receive help from local businesses and residents, but we are always grateful for any further assistance. We have a charity shop in Warner Beach as well and whatever people donate in excess also assists us to keep the houses going. The funds raised go toward food since residents pay a percentage of their Sassa grants towards rental.  At the moment, we need a jump-start for our grocery cupboards for the new residents. To start with the grocery cupboard is always expensive. We also appeal for any spare furniture and a petrol weed eater. We will be very appreciative of any assistance to make a house a home.  This building was built from bricks from an old church, so it’s already blessed. It needs some work, but it will be amazing when we are done.”
