A TOYOTA SUV, which had been stolen in Durban North, was recovered in KwaMakhutha on Monday, February 7, after a high-speed chase through the township.

ET Rapid Response responded after a signal was picked and located the vehicle to the area. The suspects later abandoned the vehicle and managed to flee on foot evading arrest.

Also on Monday, a man and a woman suspected of various crimes in Amanzimtoti, were arrested and handed over to SAPS. George Snodey of the Community Crime Prevention Organisation Amanzimtoti (CCPO), said they had been looking for the man for a while and he was spotted walking to the CBD.

“When he realised that he had been seen, the suspect bolted, but was found hiding with the help of dogs. He was detained and taken to Toti SAPS where he was linked to a 2019 housebreaking in Harcombe Road and another case in Brakpan. After being shown photos of the other suspect involved in that housebreaking, the suspect was identified as the female that begs at the Adams Road traffic light. An officer went in search and found her, handing her over to a very happy investigating officer,” said Snodey.

Amanzimtoti SAPS communications officer, Captain Charlene van der Spuy, said police officers have worked tirelessly to ensure that perpetrators are arrested and put behind bars.

“Twelve suspects were arrested for various contact and property-related crimes such as murder, housebreaking and theft, general theft and malicious damage to property. Arrested suspects are still attending court and the detectives are confident they will be brought to book,” said Van der Spuy.

She encouraged the community to assist detectives with information that can lead to the successful apprehension and conviction of suspects.

“Any information received will be regarded as privileged and confidential. The police work hand-in-hand with community policing forums, security companies and armed response units looking at a proactive approach in keeping our area safe,” she said.
