On duty Amanzimtoti and Isipingo municipal workers intimidated

There has been little improvement in the staff reporting for duty in the Electricity and Water Departments.

ETHEKWINI Municipality staff who reported for duty to clean the Isipingo CBD and collect refuse in Amanzimtoti on March 13 were allegedly intimidated and threatened by their colleagues who are still on strike, causing them to abandon work for safety reasons.

Ward 90 councillor Shad Nowbuth said further attempts will be made to have the CBD cleaned as soon as possible.

“According to the report of the City administration, all workers were expected to return to work on March 13. Although most workers did report to their different depots, very few of them went on the ground to work,” said Nowbuth.

Earlier that day, eThekwini had indicated that refuse collection in Isipingo and Amanzimtoti would commence.

“A reminder [is given] that refuse will be collected in Isipingo Hills today (March 14). After that, the collection will be done in the Orient Hills council flats and Lotus Park council flats only. The other areas of Lotus Park and Orient Hills, and Isipingo Beach, will be done over the weekend,” he said.

He added that the Electricity and Water Departments are most affected as there has been little improvement in the staff reporting for duty.

“This means that many of the long outstanding outages still have to be resolved,” said Nowbuth.

In Amanzimtoti, ward 97 councillor, André Beetge said refuse collection for Thursday will resume once there was a police escort for the waste truck.
