Pensioner shot while asleep in Folweni

Other house occupants heard the gunshots but only realised in the morning that they were directed at one of their own.

AN elderly woman in the A-section of Folweni was shot dead in her bed on March 29. Beauty Mkhize was shot by a person who allegedly opened the window of her bedroom as she slept on her bed. The suspect has not been arrested yet.

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed that the police are investigating a murder case following an incident where an 84-year-old woman was fatally shot. According to the incident report, other occupants of the house, who were sleeping in other rooms, heard the gunshots in the middle of the night but were unaware of where they came from, so Mkhize’s lifeless body was only discovered in the morning.

“The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds on her body. The motive for the attack is unknown,” said Gwala.

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza, condemned the incident, saying it highlighted the urgent need to ensure that the elderly are protected at all times and that criminals are arrested.

“We are saddened by the continuing incidents of violent crimes perpetrated against the elderly. They are the pillars of society, and we should ensure they live their days in comfort and safety. The manner the victim was killed shows that this was done by a heartless individual,” said Khoza.
