THE Upper South Coast Art Association (USCAA) celebrated its 40th anniversary at Mooi Hawens on November 25 and reflected on the long journey it has travelled while bringing art enthusiasts together.

The Italy-themed event saw the club’s members come out in colourful garb, and they later enjoyed lasagna and other Italian eats. The club’s deputy chair, Jenny Pedlar, said when Henriette Wolmarans and Connie Hetherington decided to start an art club on the South Coast, 11 people turned up for that first meeting.

“Only nine became members, but this year, our membership stands at 45. It is to their credit and all those who followed that the USCAA has continued to be a place where people who enjoy painting and artwork can meet on a regular basis to share interests, knowledge, and skills. Here we are, this year, celebrating our 40th anniversary, still upholding the vision of those earlier members,” said Jenny.

The club has faced some challenges over the past few years including the loss of the use of the library’s hall and Covid-19 restrictions.

She showed appreciation to Mooi Hawens for allowing them to use their premises while the club continues to search for a permanent home. She thanked Seadoone Mall for providing a venue for fundraising exhibitions and Clifford Barker for framing the members’ artwork.
