Caxton cares: Community rallies to knit, crochet warmth for elderly
The project aims to provide warmth to senior citizens by collecting 21,000 knitted or crocheted blocks to create 500 blankets.
WITHIN a few days, another seven knee blankets were donated to the Caxton Cares Square by Square project.
“These donations takes the tally up to 14 blankets that will go towards our senior citizens who needs a little extra warmth this winter,” said the editor of the Southlands/ South Coast SUN, Roelien D’Amico.

“Words cannot describe the gratitude I am feeling right now. I started this project with the hopes in finding people who would be willing donate their time and energy to something that is very close to my heart, caring for our elderly. Although I know we still have a long way to go, with many blankets still outstanding, just knowing that there are eager crocheters and knitters who feel the same way I do it, is really special,” she added.
In order to complete 500 blankets, 21 000 knitted or crocheted blocks of 15cm x 15cm are needed. The blocks will be sewn together to make a 90cm knee blanket.
“You don’t have to be a professional, as long as you have the basic understanding of knitting and crocheting and can put a few stitches together to make either a blanket or a block, you can create your own masterpiece.
“All it takes is the love you have for the craft and for the elderly. It is not only about being creative, but also the amount of love and blessings you have for our senior citizens,” she added.
D’Amico said that the project is also still in need of wool. A WhatsApp group has been created to give those who participate or just need a helping hand, the encouragement to continue.
Send a WhatsApp message to 079 728 6787, call the office on 031 903 2341 or send an email to sunads@dbn.caxton.co.za. Donation boxes for wool are available at The Mudpie Co, 771 Marine Drive, The Bluff or at the SUN office, 33 Main Road, Doonside, Amanzimtoti.
The closing date for this project is June 2, with distribution to take place in July. There are a few spot prizes up for grabs. The person who donated the most wool, or crocheted or knitted the most blocks, will win a special treat sponsored by Pia Health and Beauty Spa, Amanzimtoti. There are also breakfast vouchers from Clear Waters Spur in Beach Road up for grabs.
