Five things you can do daily to curb plastic pollution
Upcoming events include a clean-up of Illovo Beach, an e-waste collection drive and a river clean-up on Ilanda Wilds.
EVERY piece of plastic on the beach started its journey somewhere on land. This is why NPOs Tidy Towns Amanzimtoti and Clean Surf Project are partnering up, running clean-ups along the coast, delivering environmental education to young children and fighting litter in the community every day.

Clean Surf Project’s Romy Wenzel invites community members to take on a plastic-free challenge, starting with one swap, a re-usable bag, bottle or cup. Tag @CleanSurfProject in your posts and join the NPO to protect the coast together.
Daily changes that curb plastic pollution
- Participate in recycling campaigns.
- Pick five items each day that are exposed in the environment.
- Take a plastic bag when strolling on the beach, picking up what is not organic/natural.
- Join community clean-ups.
- Reduce and/or avoid single use plastics. Buy loose vegetables, use material or paper bags, avoid using polystyrene, use paper/metal straws, dispose of cigarette waste appropriately. Use paper or bamboo swabs as opposed to cotton swabs.
Upcoming clean-up initiatives
- Efforts to keep Illovo Beach clean will continue on August 1 from 09:00 until 11:00. Meet at Old Illovo Africa Lodge on 21 Illovo Beach Road. Refuse bags will be supplied. Bring gloves, a sun hat, water, comfortable shoes and sun screen.
- Drop off your e-waste at 14 Lewis Drive, RE/MAX Amanzimtoti, from 09:00 until 12:00. Keep Amanzimtoti clean, green and beautiful by recycling the following items responsibly: computers and laptops, printers and scanners, monitors, cables and chargers, cell phones and small household electronics.
- On September 16, for National River Clean-up Day, the focus will be on Ilanda Wilds, Amanzimtoti River.
