Accused in policemen’s murder arrested in Amanzimtoti
Five men are accused of ambushing and opening fire on the state car that Captain Louis Nel and Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo were travelling in.
OF THE five men who were arrested and appeared in court relating to the murders of two Crime Intelligence Unit officers in Mount Edgecombe in April, one of them was arrested in Amanzimtoti recently.

Simangaliso Tembe (39) and his co-accused appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on September 28. The others, Mduduzi Myeza, Bongani Zulu, Wandile Nyawo, and Sibusiso Sibisi were arrested in Pinetown, Cowies Hill, Newlands West, and Mandeni, respectively.
They are accused of ambushing and opening fire on the state car that Captain Louis Nel and Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo were travelling in, and stealing a bag containing a substantial amount of cash that the two officers were transporting.
Nel died instantly of gunshot wounds, while Khuzwayo died a few weeks later in hospital.
At the time of the officers’ deaths, acting national police commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, condemned the incident, saying that the killing of police officers poses a serious threat to the State’s authority and its ability to combat crime.
“We remain deeply concerned by the targeting of police officers and are intensifying measures aimed at enhancing and improving police safety,” said Dimpane.
The men are expected back in court on October 16 to apply for bail.
