2 rifles and 5000 rounds of ammunition recovered in Bassonia
A Bassonia firearms operation has taken two rifles and about 5,000 rounds of ammunition off the streets, with a 32-year-old man now facing charges for allegedly possessing unlicensed weapons and ammunition.
A 32-year-old man has been arrested after members of the Johannesburg Flying Squad recovered two rifles and 5000 rounds of ammunition during a crime intelligence-driven operation in Bassonia on August 25.
The operation followed information received by police regarding suspected illegal firearms and ammunition, according to Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko.
“Members of the Johannesburg Flying Squad followed up on information regarding illegal firearms and ammunition and proceeded to a residential premises in Bassonia,” said Sibeko.
Police recovered a .308 rifle, a .22 rifle and 5000 rounds of ammunition of various calibres at the property.
The suspect was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Sibeko said police investigations are ongoing, with the suspect expected to appear before a magistrate’s court soon.
