Mondeor murder case postponed as the accused changes lawyers
Mondeor pool hall murder case postponed as the accused changes lawyers for a third time. The case will resume in September.
A 19-year-old is facing a murder charge after allegedly fatally stabbing another teenager (18) at Ballbreakers, a pool hall in Mondeor on April 5, 2025.
The case was heard at the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on August 5 and 6.
The accused continued to appear in court virtually.
Magistrate Vele once again found the case delayed because the prosecution’s witnesses had not been finalised.
At the previous appearance, the case was finalised for pretrial for a third time.
Magistrate Vele then stood the case down to finalise details of the pretrial with defence attorney Mr Kruger.
After a lengthy meeting, when the case resumed, the defence indicated that a witness could not be located and that a medical report still needed to be obtained from a doctor.
These issues caused further delays in the case, which eventually resumed on August 6.
The defence attorney, Mr Kruger, then suddenly withdrew from the case, stating that the accused could no longer afford to pay his fee.
Magistrate Vele expressed his frustration over the withdrawal.
“This case involves a murder and the defence seems to think it does not matter; the accused is still on bail, and there has been no progress,” said Magistrate Vele.
The case was then postponed to September 28 for a new defence attorney to come on record.
