Public helps off-duty cop catch suspect with stolen goods

Suspects were walking in public with stolen goods until a cop saw them.

JOHANNESBURG – While driving to get lunch, Sergeant Nhlapo was diverted to chase a group of young males carrying a black 32-inch plasma television screen, laptops and computer monitors at South Hills on Friday February 14, around 11:30.

Nhlapho was driving down Nephin Road, when he noticed five men carrying something heavy and walking off into the bush. Two men from the observing public helped catch one of the three suspects when he fell down after a warning shot was fired.

The other four suspects ran away, leaving the fallen man behind with the plasma TV and a plastic bag containing DVD’s. Nhlapho took the stolen goods and the suspect to Moffatview station, where a case was opened.

“I think it was a great thing of the two members of the public to help the cop. Those criminals were not supposed to walk in public with stolen goods in the first place,” said Gigi, who resides in South Hills.

“I cannot believe they actually walked in public with stolen goods. The public is not as concerned as it should be. How could criminals walk in the streets carrying a heavy television set without anyone suspecting anything? This calls for the public to be extra vigilant,” said Nonnie Motaung.
