Joburg municipality caught in a billing mess

“I pay my taxes and rent, and is this the service I deserve?"

JOHANNESBURG – Caylem Williams bought a house in Mayfield Park last year December, paid all the remaining fees but still receives bills out of all proportion monthly.

Williams paid off all the bills that remained from the previous owners so that he could have a fresh start, but today he is disappointed that City Power sends his bills to the previous owners of the home.

“I thought maybe the problem was with me, I changed the water pipes just in case they had a leak, changed the stove with intentions to save water, power and see changes.

“By February I had used only 320 units, because my geyser is down most of the time, but the bill was over R5 000. It shouldn’t even be R2000!

“I am now asking myself why I should bother paying them, because they send me ridiculous bills in the end. They make these mistakes and then charge me interest.

“I pay my taxes and rent, and this is the service I deserve? I am gathering evidence should they pursue legal action against me. Besides, that will cost me money I do not have,” said Williams.

Williams started taking photographs of his meter and took it to City Power’s contractor, Sebeta, but they also send him to City Power and he now feels like he is just moving in a loop.

He spent a lot of money trying to get this fixed, only to be sent from one place to another, with no solution to his problem. The COURIER still awaits Sebata’s response while City Power could not be reached.
