GLENANDA – It is suspected the goods were brought over the South African border from the Congo and Angola.
Devon Lewis, a Hercules Armed Response member, made the discovery along with Mondeor SAPS and Mondeor Community Policing Forum.
“I was on Marnewick Avenue, Glenanda, when I saw a white Hilux bakkie parked outside a high-walled house. Three black males were standing next to the gate. They looked very suspicious and suddenly took off in the bakkie. I chased them and managed to stop the bakkie nearby Columbine Avenue. When I asked them why they were standing outside the house on Marnewick Avenue, they told me their brother lives there. They sped off and I contacted Michelle Pelser who is with Mondeor Community Policing Forum and Mondeor SAPS,” said Devon.
They all met at the house and managed to gain entry onto the premises. Inside the garage they found hundreds of boxes of beauty products from Congo. They made a further search inside the house and discovered thousands of boxes of goods, some from Congo and some from Angola.
Outside in the back garden was a pit bull female dog. “She’s definitely not starving and looks in pretty good condition,” said Pelser. The Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) were called to the scene and the dog was taken away for examination.
“We suspect the goods have been brought here illegally. None of the boxes have the SABS stamp and some boxes contain packets of tablets. All the boxes will be confiscated and taken to Mondeor Police Station,” said Constable Mnguni, who was on the scene.
Letters were found at the house addressed to a man, who SAPS beleive to be the owner of the property. “We’ll make contact with this man as soon as possible and try to obtain more information about the tenants who were using the house to store all the goods,” Constable Mnguni added.
