DA fights for residents with a petition to Eskom
On Saturday April 11 the DA Boroang branch in Ward 56 in Johannesburg, together with the DA Joburg South constituency, presented a DA petition at The Glen Shopping Centre.
OAKDENE – This petition demanded that the bosses of Eskom pay back the bonuses that they have been paid over recent years and that any future bonuses be placed on hold until we emerge from the crisis of load shedding!
The DA’s petition noted that since load shedding began in 2008 the top executives of Eskom have received a staggering R63 million in performance bonuses. This is in addition to their already high salaries. DA Boroang branch secretary Michael Crichton said, “This is completely unacceptable as these executives clearly do not deserve bonuses while our country is being plunged literally into darkness for lengthy periods of time!”
DA Boroang Branch Publicity Chair, Anand Rangasammy said, “What is especially concerning is that in Johannesburg our power is cut sometimes for about four hours a day and this puts a severe strain on small businesses. If this continues for much longer a lot of businesses will be forced to close and people will lose their jobs”.
Linked to this important petition, was a DA information table. Ward Councillor Dennis Jane said, “In addition to our petition people were able to inform me of service delivery issues in the area that I may not be aware of. Cllr Jane further added that he was pleased that over 700 people signed the petition as it is unacceptable that these bosses still get bonuses while they can’t provide us with power! This problem needs to be addressed as soon as possible. People were also able to sign up as DA members at the table.
