Investment by cellular networks in installation of signal antennas not received well
Executive Head of Corporate Communications at Vodacom, Richard Boorman responded to the CHRONICLE on cellular network antennas.
AFTER numerous complaints about a cellular network antenna which was erected on Dalbini Street, Mulbarton, the Comaro CHRONICLE contacted Vodacom for comment.
Vodacom’s communication office did not answer questions about public participation efforts, and addressed only the issue of growing usage of cellphones and tablets.
Executive head: Corporate Communications at Vodacom, Richard Boorman, responded to the CHRONICLE, saying: ”We are investing heavily in our network, which is absolutely necessary in order to cater for the rapid increase in mobile data usage by smart phones and tablets.
”If we don’t add additional base stations, connection speeds will be slow and call quality will suffer.”Comaro CHRONICLE reporter Zesuliwe Hadebe asked whether the antennas could not have been fitted outside of residential areas and if this move would this have interfered with the strength of the signal.
Boorman responded: “The challenge we face is that pretty much everyone would like a better mobile connection, but not everyone is happy having a base station nearby. The question then becomes whether a small number of objections should be allowed to block access for hundreds or even thousands of people.
”We do, of course, comply with all relevant local planning rules.”
When asked whether the antennas posed a health risk to residents, Boorman explained: “With respect to the health question, it may help to understand how mobile devices work.
”The majority of one’s exposure to electromagnetic fields comes from the phone or tablet itself, as that is what is held close to the body.
”If that device has a good signal because the base station is nearby, it operates at a lower power setting; this helps preserve battery life. If the base station is a long distance away, the device will operate at full power. The end result is that by adding base stations, mobile devices can operate at lower power settings and reduce their electromagnetic emissions.”
