Staying calm in a threatening situation

“If you hear robbers in the home where you are working, run to the kitchen."

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – The Domestic Watch meeting, held at Sasol garage Columbine Avenue, Suideroord, covered issues pertaining to robberies in the home.

Martin Barber from SOS Security said: “If you hear robbers in the home where you are working, run to the kitchen. There are lots of things in a kitchen which you can use to fend off a robber. Keep calm and try not to scream. Try and watch what is going on so you can report information to the police or security company. Do what you are told.

“Give the robbers whatever they ask for. Try talking to the attackers and don’t aggravate them. If you are in your room lock the door and hide. If you are outside your room, try and lock the attackers in the house, lock the back door and then quickly hide in your room, not forgetting to lock the door.”

Barber also reminded everyone to always keep their hands where attackers can see them at all times.

Coordinator Michelle Pelser (Mondeor CPF) also spoke to the domestics and advised them what to do in a threatening situation. “Always listen out for your neighbours and if you hear one scream, press your panic button or call the police.”

Constable Elizabeth Mnugni, from Mondeor Police Station, demonstrated the “rule of the thumb element of surprise” and the domestics tried out the tactics on each other.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 13. For more information phone Michelle Pelser on 084 292 9144.
