CoJ to raise awareness on dementia this month

Dementia can effect people of all ages, races and genders but is more prevalent in people older than 65 years.

CITY of Johannesburg will raise awareness about dementia throughout the month of October.

Dementia can effect people of all ages, races and genders but is more prevalent in people older than 65 years. There are different types of dementia including vascular dementia, mixed dementia and Alzheimer disease.

The City’s Social Development Department in partnership with DementiaSA will embark on a comprehensive awareness campaign in hopes of educating the general public on the signs, symptoms and treatment of dementia, how to handle and support those that are already in the later stages of dementia and how to prevent elderly abuse, as a result of ignorance about the disease.

The main event was on Saturday, October 17, in Eloff Street, between Pritchard and Main streets. A second event is scheduled for Thursday, October 22, at the Southern Suburbs Sport and Recreation Centre in Berg Street, Rosettenville.
