JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – The streets of Ward 57 including La Rochelle, Moffatview, South Hills, Regents Park and the Elandspark area are deteriorating.
Clr Faeeza Chame conducted an assessment on these streets and was disappointed about their state.
“I’m in utter shock. It is totally unacceptable for our residents to be treated the way they are being treated by our government. The South African constitution states that municipalities have the responsibility to make sure that all citizens are provided with services to satisfy their basic needs.
“Municipalities must make sure that people in their areas have at least the basic services they need.

“Services such as water supply, adequate sewerage disposal, refuse removal, electricity and gas supply, municipal health services, municipal roads and stormdrain maintenance, water drainage, street lights and municipal parks and recreation,” explained Clr Chame.
She said these services have a direct and immediate effect on the lives of the people in the community. According to Clr Chame poor quality water or refuse not collected regularly, contributes to the creation of an unhealthy and unsafe living environment.
Poor service delivery can also make it difficult to attract business or industry to an area limiting job opportunities for residents.

“My plea to the ANC government is to please get your house in order and deliver to our people. Our residents have enough to worry about being safe in the streets, it is unfair to them to have to worry about the lack of service delivery too.
“On a daily basis residents have to take public transport when going to work, some of these residents will go to work when it is dark and return when it is dark. It is not safe for them to walk in our streets when street lights are not working.
“Our residents are feeling hopeless. Let us work together to restore hope where there was none and work towards bettering the lives of our residents,” she said.
