Helping each other make a difference

Lions JHB South has taken the centre on as a project with Teresa Magalhaes, also a member of the JHB South Lions, heading up the feeding scheme at the centre.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH: Children, staff and volunteers of the Lighthouse Stimulation Centre for the Disabled, in Linmeyer, handed over a donation of coins to Stepping Stone Hospice and Care Services last week.

Luisa Nazareth, the founder of Lighthouse, passed away from cancer in September 2011 and according to the principal of the school, Lucilia Jacinto, they thought it fitting to make a small donation to hospice during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Dot van Eeden, a volunteer at Stepping Stone Hospice in New Market Park, has also been a member of the Lions Johannesburg South for the past 24 years, who in turn supports Lighthouse on an ongoing basis. ā€œI’m in as much awe of what this centre does for these children as what I am for the work Stepping Stone Hospice does in the community,ā€ she says.

The Lighthouse Stimulation Centre cares for 35 disabled children, 13 of whom stay at the centre during the week and only go home on weekends. Lions JHB South has taken the centre on as a project with Teresa Magalhaes, also a member of the JHB South Lions, heading up the feeding scheme at the centre. Thanks to her commitment and support from her fellow Lions, the children receive proper meals on a daily basis.
