Electron Meat Hyper: Armed robbery leaves one dead

Constable Rebecca Bila, from the Moffatview SAPS, said the men involved in the robbery were armed with pistols and AK47s.

ONE security guard was shot dead and three others injured during an armed robbery at the Electron Meat Hyper in Steeledale on Wednesday, November 11.

According to an eyewitness, who wishes to remain anonymous, shots were fired and people were running in all directions. “When I heard gun shots, I immediately ran for cover. Then I saw the men drive away in a bakkie towards town, through Heidelberg Road,” he said.

Constable Rebecca Bila, from the Moffatview SAPS, said the men involved in the robbery were armed with pistols and AK47s. “Two unknown males entered the butchery and went straight to the back office, pointed their pistols at the owner and demanded cash. They opened the safe and took an undisclosed amount of money. They also took the computer box with footage but left it outside the shop,” she said.

A group of about 10 males armed with pistols and AK47s waited outside the shop and a crossfire ensued between the suspects and security guards.

“Three security guards were injured during the shooting and the fourth security guard was shot in the head and died on the scene. The suspects were driving a red VW Golf and a black Opel Corsa bakkie, with registration unknown,” Bila said.

Police are investigating the matter.
