THREE of the eight participants from The Hamlet – Place of Hope in North Road, Regents Park have been selected to represent South Africa in ice skating in Austria for the Winter Special Olympics Games in 2017.
They were selected at the Special Olympics Winter Games event that took place from April 25 to 27 at the Northgate Shopping Centre Skating Rink. All in all 12 participants will represent South Africa.
Shane Bentley, Caroline Mignolet and Kevin Gibbs each received a gold medal. Other participants from The Hamlet were Blessing Cossa, Cedric Shialuke, Raymond Thesner, Andrew Cumming and Chantel McGregor.
The Hamlet Foundation is an NGO founded in 1954. It has grown and developed to include a school for 270 intellectually disabled children, a residential centre for 54 to 60 intellectually disabled adults and a protective workshop for 200 intellectually disabled adult workers. They aim to develop and empower the individual towards achieving their maximum potential, enabling them to lead as normal a life as possible.
