Reliable transport for children a must

LEARNER transport needs to be safe and reliable, for the sake of all in the community.
This is according to Southern Suburbs School Transport Organisation (SSSTO), which is determined to eradicate the pirate operation of learner transport vehicles in the South. Its chairperson, Koki Ncaba, said their mandate is not only to bring learners to school, but also to make sure they are safe while in transit.
“We are embarking on a project where we assist the schools in the South to have safe and reliable transport. This organisation will help to regulate the transportation of learners in the South. No one will do as they please anymore. Parents need to know the drivers belong to an organisation that cares for the well-being of the learners. We are starting this project at Regents Park Primary School and it will spread to other schools as well,” explained Koki.
Regents Park Primary School principal Karl Schofield welcomed the SSSTO initiative and was pleased that their school was chosen to pioneer it. “We appreciate the gesture,” he said. “The staff, SGB and the learners welcome SSSTO into our school. With the recent reported spate of accidents involving learner’s transport we hope this organisation will assist in curbing the carnage.
“Parents do ask us for reliable transportation and we can now tell them there is safe reliable transport. I also urge the parents to be involved in their children’s day-to-day transportation. They need to know who picks up their children at all times,” he said.
Jabu Dhlamini, who deals with grievances in the organisation, said they want to get rid of the illegal operation of learner transport bakkies in the area. “We promise to deliver a great service to the community of the South,” she said.
The organisation’s vice-chairperson Lily Sigasa said they donated reflective bibs for the scholar patrollers. “We will also be painting the front palisade fence of the school. Among other things that we will be giving to other schools are sanitary towels and toilet paper,” she said.
