City Power’s final call for free electricity meter repairs

“Illegal connections also impacts on the lives of residents who are paying for services.”

City Power has issued a final call for free electricity meter repairs.

In a statement, the City Power Member of the Mayoral Committee Clr Nico de Jager said residents with tampered city power electricity meters had until Friday, June 30 to register their meters and have them normalised by technicians for free.

De Jager said the registrations for the repairs could be done at the City Power’s head office, 40 Heronmere Road in Booysens.

“If we wish to keep the City’s lights on, upgrade infrastructure and electrify more informal settlements, the non-payment for services due to bridged meters and illegal connections must become a thing of the past.”

He said illegal connections and bridged meters were a hazard and could result in serious injuries or in worst case scenarios, death.

“Illegal connections also impacts on the lives of residents who are paying for services, as they overload our system and results in power surges and lengthy outages.”

Adding that tampering with the City’s infrastructure and vandalising City property resulted in the costs of millions in Rands each year. He said these funds could be used to enhance and expand services.

“It is imperative that we change residents’ mindsets about non-payment for services, and the Department of Environment and Infrastructure Service Delivery will devise a strategic plan over the course of the next few weeks to ensure that we achieve this objective.”

In part of the plan, De Jager said the city would look for a way to impose penalties against those found using illegal connections and bridged meters.
