South Rand Hospital responds to claim of misconduct

“South Rand had examined Andre on Tuesday July 4 and had discovered that he had a broken arm.”

SOUTH Rand Hospital has issued a response to allegations of misconduct after claims made by a mother that her son was discharged from the hospital without the adequate procedure.

Vera Le Pere claimed South Rand Hospital discharged her homeless son André le Pere, who was stabbed and beaten by six men two weeks ago, without any ex-rays being done.

She said her son was brutally attacked on July 2 and was transferred to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital after South Rand found out Andre actually had a broken arm two days after the hospital discharged him.

South Rand Hospital issued a statement confirming André was attended to on July 2.

Spokesperson Phafudi Molapo said André had sustained injuries from the alleged assault and was examined by the doctor at the Accident and Emergency department.

“At the time of consultation, the patient was clinically stable.”

He said South Rand Hospital was continuously striving towards improving the quality of healthcare services.

Molapo said the hospital management had been in constant communication with the family and had met the family and was committed to providing further medical assistance including socio-psychological assistance.

“The hospital constantly provides multidisciplinary services to its clients.”

Andre’s uncle Willy Jacobs said the hospital needed to be held accountable for their actions at all times.

He told the COURIER South Rand had examined André on July 4 and had discovered that he had a broken arm.

Jacobs confirmed André was transferred to the Charlotte Maxheke hospital.

A response from the hospital to confirm André was admitted was still to be confirmed.

Mother Vera said the six men attacked her son André when he was going to visit a friend on Prerry Street in Rosettonville.

She said her son regained consciousness surrounded by police men after the attack which indicated the severity of the matter.

Vera said the accident happened around 09:00 and André was discharged after his wounds were stitched by 12:00 on the same day.

She arrived at the hospital on that Sunday to find her son on a drip and further said André was severely swollen and bleeding.

“After a short while, we [family] were told he was discharged as he was not deemed a serious enough case, according to one of the nurses.”

She said the treatment her son received from the hospital needed changing.
