Former stars rally fans innthe south as Pirates and Arrows defend semi final leads.
The 2026 edition of the MTN8 has reached the decisive second leg of the semi-finals, with Orlando Pirates and Lamontville Golden Arrows holding narrow advantages.
Orlando Pirates take a 1-0 lead into the second leg against Sekhukhune United, as the four-time defending champions chase an unprecedented fifth consecutive MTN8 title.
In the other semi-final, Golden Arrows carry a narrow lead into their home leg against Mamelodi Sundowns after pulling off a surprise result in the first leg.
The semi-final drama was on the agenda during the promotion of the football tournament in Joburg South, where former players shared their views on the Wafa Wafa action.
Former Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United midfielder Linda Mntambo spoke about his love for both clubs.
Mntambo, who has worn the jerseys of both semi-finalists, said while Pirates are favourites, Sekhukhune still have a chance to turn the tie around.
“I have both clubs in my heart,” said Mntambo. “I hope Sekhukhune show what they can do, as they have talented players.”
Also giving his input during the promotion was former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Vuyo Mere.
Mere spoke about Sundowns’ desire to recover from their first-leg semi-final loss to Lamontville Golden Arrows.
He said Masandawana need to improve defensively if they are to overturn the deficit but insisted their attack remains one of the best in African football and can still win them the tie.
“Sundowns have a lot to do defensively, but in attack, they are very efficient and skilled,” said Mere.
Both former players believe that whichever team claims the title will have great confidence going into the league campaign.
When asked who will meet in the final, both had their respective picks.
“I say Sekhukhune and Sundowns in the final,” Mntambo said.
“I will go for what we all want to see, which is Pirates versus Sundowns,” Mere said.
The winners of the two ties will meet in the MTN8 final on October 10.
