Rand Water plant trips cause widespread supply shortages in Joburg South
Restoration efforts are underway as multiple reservoir zones across the city face overnight shut-offs and low pressure following power trips.
Johannesburg Water issued an urgent customer notice yesterday warning of poor pressure to no water in parts of Joburg South, with Foresthill and Crown Gardens among the worst-affected systems.
In the notice, Johannesburg Water said its central systems were experiencing poor incoming supply following multiple trips at Rand Water’s Vereeniging Purification Plant overnight.
The utility said this had a delayed impact on the Swartkopjes Pumping Station and Foresthill reservoirs.
The following Johannesburg Water systems have been impacted: Foresthill, Yeoville, Hector Norris and Crown Gardens.
Impact on infrastructure
Forest Hill Tower is on bypass and supplying low due to declining incoming supply, including direct feeds, with poor pressure to no water expected in higher-lying areas of Forest Hill.
Crown Gardens Reservoir is critically low, and the outlet has been closed to build capacity. Pumping to the tower will be suspended overnight. No water is expected in the Crown Gardens Reservoir zone, with improvements anticipated overnight.
Hector Norris Pump Station pumping has also been suspended due to poor incoming supply, with poor pressure to no water expected in the Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, Berea Reservoir is low and declining, and Parktown 2 Reservoir is declining but supplying fairly.
The entity said it is implementing various interventions across the city’s network to support recovery, and will provide further updates.
