Spring clean-up in Bellavista

SOJO is pleased to join in the Spring Clean-up at Bellavista this year, as part of their ongoing drive and awareness to improve the aesthetics of Kliprivier Drive.

CROSS Culture City Church (CCCC) partnered with SOJO Business and Tourism on September 9 for a spring clean and outreach to the Bellavista Community.

The day began with local residents and volunteers from various groups cleaning up piles of litter surrounding the soccer grounds and under the trees visible from Kliprivier Drive. Over 150 bags of litter were collected, together with other rubble. These hot spot areas are frequented by local drug addicts and drug dealers. Another group of volunteers provided educational activities for the children, which included go-carting, games, face painting and a message about Jesus’ Love.

PLAYTIME: Children had an opportunity to enjoy themselves.

During the day, 208 people gathered for a service under the marquee sponsored by M&M Hiring Marquee cc. Afterwards, Cross Culture Worship Team led the group in song, Pastor Jan van Reenen shared how God is calling people home. His rendition of the prodigal son brought many tears to those who gathered together. The day ended with the residents of Bellavista being treated to various items, which filled three trailers, donated by the CCCC congregation and general community.

SOJO is pleased to join in the spring clean-up at Bellavista this year, as part of their ongoing drive and awareness to improve the aesthetics of Kliprivier Drive. Working together with the church brought a new approach to the transformation of these much-challenged areas. Nicky Vakaloudis, CEO of SOJO said: “It’s one thing to clean-up where people continuously and irresponsibly litter, but a completely different intervention when one engages with the community to instill ownership, worthiness and hope. A mind shift from old behaviour is a journey and having a church on board to help with some of the principles is encouraging and refreshing in these difficult times.”

Van Reenen added: “People who value themselves will also value their surroundings. Our job is to help install a godly sense of self-worth to people.” He reminded all present that they are valuable in God’s sight.

Nicky said they thank the ward councillor, Rashida Landis and her ward committee for being present and committed to her area of influence. “Thank you to everyone who took part and dedicated a few hours of their Saturday to make a difference. Together we are making the South of Joburg great,” she said.

CLEAN-UP: Doing it for themselves.
