Can government solely govern schools?

Community comments on the proposed bill by the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) which will rob school governing bodies (SGB) of their authority.

THE RECORD took to the streets to find out what residents feel about the GDE’s proposal to change the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill which will affect governing bodies at schools.

MICHELLE PELSER: “The SGB’s does too much for the schools. They help with the upkeep of the school, hiring of extra educators and government can’t take that away. People are interested in their kids’ education and the department will be cutting off the schools limbs.”
KYLE BARGER: “I don’t agree with this decision because it is not the government’s right to do this. They’re going to standardise decisions without knowing the specific needs of the schools. They aren’t even a part of the school so how will they know what decisions to make?”
LETITIA VISSER: “Classes are going to have too many children and they will suffer. This bill is ridiculous because now the government can and probably will bring in unqualified educators to schools.”
GAVIN NEL: “The government can’t take away SGB’s because classes will get too full with some classes of 50 or 60 children. I personally won’t send my child to schools with such full classes.”
