Elderly treated to Christmas feast, gifts
The Christmas special was made possible by a few donors within the community, including students from the South African Chefs Association.
SOUTH Hills’ elderly enjoyed an early Christmas party on Saturday, November 25.
They did not hold back as they showed off their dance moves in an event organised especially for them.
The party was organised by Sylvia Govender, who started a community service for the elderly six years ago, assisting those in old age homes with free electricity units.
Mother Sylvia, as she is affectionately known, started the Golden Age Club in February 2014 on Valentine’s Day. She runs clubs at various old age homes.
She helps provide the elderly with vegetables and bread to take away and ensures they are treated to a hot meal in the homes.
On the day each of the senior citizens was given breakfast, lunch and dessert, and a gift pack to take home.
Govender said the elderly are attended to by nurses to check their blood pressure and sugar levels once a month.
The Christmas surprise was made possible by a few donors within the community, including South African Chefs Association students and lecturer Yejna Maharaj. The budding chefs pulled out all the stops to ensure the elderly had a Christmas party to remember.
