The ANC caucus in the City of Johannesburg is disappointed at the closure of 20 of the 55 swimming facilities in the City right through the December and January holidays (COURIER, January 23).
The Democratic Alliance’s failure to manage the procurement process necessary for purchasing pool chemicals, is a clear indication of how this administration is unable to run the City of Johannesburg effectively. It further proves that the City is in financial dire straits. The DA-led administration is incapable of managing its procurement processes and this incompetence directly affects the people of Johannesburg. This administration continues to fail the residents of Johannesburg.
The December/January season is the hottest season of the year and children utilise the facilities regularly. The use of swimming facilities is a priority to the people of Johannesburg, especially during these times.
This administration has been in power since August 2016, and in 2017 the City approved a budget tabled by them. Therefore, the closure of the swimming facilities showed a lack of foresight by the DA, and is a gross disservice to affected residents. As the ANC caucus, we believe that this negligence by the DA is driven by the fact that, the primary beneficiaries of community swimming facilities are children from disadvantaged communities, who don’t have the luxury of private swimming pools at home and are of no consequence to the DA.
The ANC Caucus in the City of Johannesburg wishes to extend its sincerest apologies to all affected residents for the incompetence of the DA and hope that this issue will be addressed with the haste it deserves.
