Shop operating illegally in The Hill closed down

“I am extremely pleased that the rule of law has been applied, as I believe that the majority of our residents want to live in a law-abiding society.” - Clr Michael Crichton

A SHOP that was illegally operating at 4th Avenue and Virginia Road in The Hill was closed down after an inspection was conducted by city officials on May 22.

Ward 56 Clr Michael Crichton said according to the health inspector, her department has not received an application for a shop to be opened at that address, and as a result, they did not have a health compliance certificate.

It also emerged that town planning had also not received any application for the property to be rezoned for business purposes and as a result of all these findings the shop had to be closed down.

In addition, the inspector from building control revealed that the building plans submitted were to build a double garage rather than a shop. This means the shop owner deviated from their original plans and was then issued with a warning.

Crichton said: “The following officials were there to inspect: a representative from building control, an environmental health inspector, the JMPD, and Ward 56 ward committee member for safety Natasha Holdane Olsen. It is officials such as these that assist to make our city a better place. I would like to thank Guardian Angels Security for accompanying us to the inspection. Furthermore, I would like to thank the officials from the various departments for the professional manner in which they dealt with this matter.

“I am extremely pleased that the rule of law has been applied, as I believe that the majority of our residents want to live in a law-abiding society.”
